The Attawapiskat First Nation declared an emergency on May 19, 2004, due to the threat of severe flooding in the community. Winter ice is breaking up on the Attawapiskat River causing potential public safety concerns. Attawapiskat First Nation activated its emergency plan, sending evacuees to the host communities of Cochrane, Moosonee and Timmins. Each host community has in turn declared an emergency to assist the evacuees. Ministry of Natural Resources, from the Aviation, Fire and Flood Centre in Sault Ste Marie, and Emergency Management Ontario, from the Provincial Operations Centre in Toronto, are coordinating the evacuation and liaising with stakeholders and all levels of government.
This emergency was officially terminated May 28, 2004.
