Chemistry

Chemistry staff conduct physical and chemical analyses of such materials as:

  • paint;
  • glass;
  • fire debris;
  • gunshot residue;
  • explosives;
  • soils & minerals;
  • plastics;
  • metals;
  • cosmetics;
  • lubricants;
  • gums & resins;
  • soap & detergent;
  • tar & asphalt;

They also conduct metallurgical and mechanical testing of broken or faulty parts and interpret data gathered from the scenes of motor vehicle or industrial accidents, crimes, fires and explosions. Chemistry staff are also responsible for restoring obliterated serial numbers and identification stamps.
