Penalties for Non-compliance

There are penalties if someone is convicted of a criteria sex offence but does not register with the Ontario Sex Offender Registry or gives false information to the registry.

The first time someone is convicted of failing to register or giving false information, the penalty is:

  • A fine of no more than $25,000 or
  • Imprisonment of no more than one year or
  • Both the fine and imprisonment.

If an individual fails to register on any additional occasions, or gives false information, the penalty is:

  • A fine of no more than $25,000 or
  • Imprisonment for a term of no more than two years less a day or
  • Both the fine and imprisonment.
