Private Security & Investigative Services
Licenses and Forms
On Aug. 23, 2007, the Private Security and Investigative Services Act came into effect. The new law requires security industry workers to be licensed, including some that were not licensed previously.
If you are a security guard, private investigator, bodyguard, bouncer or loss prevention personnel, you must now apply for a licence from this ministry.
Businesses that sell security services still need to be licenced and must renew annually.
Business Registration
Under the act, any business entity that employs its own in-house security personnel, but is not in the business of selling security services, is required to register with the Private Security and Investigative Services Branch.
This may include, but is not limited to retail stores, hotels and hospitals. Registrations are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Businesses that employ security staff from a licensed security business do not need to register. To ensure all registrations are issued on time, businesses are requested to apply before August 23, 2008.
