Hours of Work

A correctional institution must be staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is imperative that staffing levels are sufficient at all times to maintain the safety and security of all staff, inmates and the community. As such, correctional officers are required to work a variety of shifts, (days, afternoons, nights), on weekdays, weekends and on statutory holidays, sometimes with very short notice.

Initially, new correctional officers are hired as fixed-term employees. You are called in or scheduled for shifts as needed to backfill planned or unplanned absences.

In time, you may become permanent, full time employee with a regular shift pattern, which will vary from one institution to another. Shift lengths generally range from 8 to 12 hours.
