Becoming a Correctional Officer

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for employment as a correctional office in Ontario, all candidates must complete the ministry's correctional officer START (Staff Application, Recruitment and Training) program.

The program is designed to equip prospective correctional officers with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to begin their new careers in corrections.

There are three components to the START program:

  • admission;
  • pre-employment training; and
  • institutional orientation.

Each component must be completed successfully before the candidate progresses to the next stage.

Candidates are responsible for assuming the cost of their pre-employment training.
