Centre of Forensic Sciences Biology

Most examinations conducted by the biology section staff of the Centre of Forensic Sciences deal with crimes against persons, including sexual assault, aggravated assault and homicide.

Centre biologists perform many types of analysis, the most publicized being:

• DNA profiling;
• bloodstain pattern interpretation

Analysts seek to identify substances such as blood, saliva and semen and to classify them based on their biological, chemical and physical characteristics. Evidence from these tests can be crucial in establishing identity, sequence of events and possible relationships between objects, individuals and locations.
