Deputy Minister, Community Safety and Correctional ServicesDeborah Newman
Deborah Newman was appointed Deputy Minister, Community Safety and Correctional Services, in 2005, following appointments as Deputy Minister of Community Safety, Assistant Deputy Minister, Youth Justice Services, and Assistant Deputy Minister of Community and Young Offender Services. As a Deputy Minister of the largest ministry in the OPS delivering direct services, Ms Newman's responsibilities include provincial correctional services, policing, the Centre of Forensic Sciences, and the oversight of municipal police, criminal intelligence, private investigators and security guards and animal welfare.Her previous positions in the OPS have included: Deputy Superintendent at Maplehurst Correctional Complex, Superintendent at the Ontario Correctional Institute, Executive Assistant to the Deputy Solicitor General and Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, and Regional Manager, District Administrator, and Regional Director of Community and Young Offender Services. Prior to joining the Ontario Public Service in 1987, Ms Newman held a number of senior management roles in correctional services in Alberta. Ms Newman holds a Master's degree in Criminology from the University of Ottawa and is a graduate of the Queen's University Public Executive Program. In 2006, she was the recipient of the Amethyst Award, Ontario's premier achievement honour, as part of the Youth Justice Transformation team leading the transformation of the delivery of services to youth in conflict with the law. |
