TASK: Conduct remote surveillance of premises

DETAIL: Watch/look at video monitor/alarm board for alarm signals or illegal/suspicious/criminal behaviour/activity on job site/premises, notifying others for assistance (e.g., police, emergency assistance) (as necessary), and writing down/typing in entries/notes of any irregular cues/behaviours

Using: notebook, pen, computer, two-way radio, camera, video monitor/Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), company-specific documents, and phone

Drawing on: knowledge of industry related equipment, knowledge of company specific policies and procedures, knowledge of Federal/Provincial legislation, and knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada

Relying on: observation skills/attention to detail, judgment/decision-making skills, and oral/written communication skills

In order to: conduct remote surveillance of premises


Resource/Asset Protection

TASK: Conduct in-person surveillance of premises

DETAIL: Walk around job site (as necessary), looking/watching individual(s)/premises for cues/signs/behavioural patterns of criminal activity in the environment (e.g., poor lighting, excessive loitering, vandalism), testing alarm systems, writing notes/observations in notebook, and talking to dispatch/supervisor/police (as necessary)

Using: two-wary radio, computer, phone, pen, notebook, and camera

Drawing on: knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, knowledge of industry related equipment, and knowledge of company specific policies and procedures

Relying on: judgment and decision-making skills, observation skills/attention to detail

In order to: conduct in-person surveillance of premises


Resource/Asset Protection

TASK: Detain suspect without physical contact

DETAIL: Observe individual(s) committing an indictable offence against people/property, verbally stopping suspect, persuading suspect to remain at scene, asking questions (as necessary), calling dispatcher/police, waiting for police to arrive, and providing verbal/written statement to police (as necessary)

Using: phone, two-way radio, and Public Announcement (PA) system

Drawing on: knowledge of defensive tactics/use of force, knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, and knowledge of company specific policies and procedures

Relying on: assertiveness, judgment/decision-making skills, interpersonal skills, and oral/written communication skills

In order to: detain suspect without physical contact


Emergency Response

TASK: Monitor alarm and determine need for response and follow-up

DETAIL: Watch/listen to emergency communication devices (e.g., alarm board, CCTV screen, phone panel), evaluating communication for seriousness and urgency, informing others (e.g., call police, press alarm button) (as necessary)

Using: phone, two-way radio, PA system, audio-visual system, pager, CCTV, and Digital Video Recorder

Drawing on: knowledge of company specific policies and procedures, knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and knowledge of industry-related equipment

Relying on: judgment/decision-making skills, and observation skills/attention to detail

Emergency Response

TASK: Respond to emergency alarm

DETAIL: Walk/drive/ride to alarm location, dispatching others to location (as necessary), examining surroundings and circumstances of incident, talking to witnesses and others, deciding on cause of incident and required response (e.g., call to maintenance department, emergency services, or fire department), and informing others (e.g., police) (as necessary)

Using: company vehicle, phone, pager, two-way radio, and PA system

Drawing on: knowledge of industry-related equipment, and knowledge of company specific policies and procedures

Relying on: judgment/decision-making skills, stress management/composure, and oral/written communication skills

In order to: respond to emergency alarm


Emergency Response

TASK: Communicate details of incident

DETAIL: Talk to individuals impacted by emergency situation (e.g., supervisor, fire personnel, insurance company), verbally reporting details of incident and emergency response, and answering follow-up questions (as necessary)

Using: phone, two-way radio and PA system, audio-visual system, and pager

Drawing on: knowledge of company specific policies and procedures

Relying on: oral/written communication skills, judgment/decision-making skills, interpersonal skills, and stress management/composure

In order to: communicate details of incident


Emergency Response

TASK: Isolate emergency scene

DETAIL: Secure emergency area (e.g., close, cordon off, monitor), directing people and vehicles away from emergency area to alternate sites (as necessary), and talking to other emergency personnel (e.g., other security guards, fire fighters) (as necessary)

Using: phone, two-way radio, PA system, pager, and caution tape

Drawing on: knowledge of company specific policies and procedures and knowledge of Federal/Provincial legislation

Relying on: interpersonal skills, assertiveness, stress management/composure, and oral/written communication skills

In order to: isolate emergency scene


Emergency Response

TASK: Manage emergency situation

DETAIL: Observe emergency scene, identifying self and asking questions of person(s) at scene, assisting others (e.g., stopping crime, giving first aid, evacuating the area), and writing down incident details

Using: personal protective equipment (e.g. gloves, masks, gowns), medical or spills kit, two-way radio, pager, phone, pen, notebook

Drawing on: knowledge of company specific policies and procedures, knowledge of first aid procedures, and knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Material Information System

Relying on: oral/written communication skills, observation skills, assertiveness, teamwork, and judgment/decision-making skills

In order to: manage emergency situation


Dealing with other personnel in the company

TASK: Perform in-company security duties directed to individuals

DETAIL: Escort employees/company representatives (e.g., terminated, under discipline) into/out of facilities, collecting company property/documentation (e.g., badges, keys) from individuals (e.g., employees), logging/securing personal property/information/security access, monitoring employee leaving work space (as necessary), observing/monitoring disciplinary/termination procedures (as necessary), and inform employee(s) of company policies/procedures and consequences of subsequent violations (as necessary)

Using: company property/documentation/security access (e.g., badges)

Drawing on: knowledge of company specific policies and procedures and knowledge of non-violent crisis intervention techniques

Relying on: stress management/composure, interpersonal skills, and oral/written communication skills

In order to: perform in-company security duties directed to individuals


Recordkeeping

TASK: Provide documentation on events and incidents

DETAIL: Record facts and observations in notebook, taking pictures/drawing diagrams (as necessary), retrieving report templates from file/computer, writing/typing up reports (e.g., incident, special occurrence), transferring/copying information (from notebook, audio/video monitors) to incident report/log book, sending copy of incidence report to supervisor/management, and verbally communicating incident information to co-worker/supervisor (as necessary)

Using: computer, email, notebook, pen, photocopier, camera, audio-visual equipment, and company report templates

Drawing on: knowledge of basic computer applications, and knowledge of company specific policies and procedures

Relying on: oral/written communication skills, observation skills/attention to detail, and judgment/decision-making skills

Recordkeeping

TASK: Prepare and maintain routine administrative records

DETAIL: Retrieve administrative report (i.e., from computer/file), writing/typing report (e.g., time sheets, check list, weekly or monthly inspections), compiling/updating reports (e.g., case documents) (as necessary), conveying administrative report to supervisor/manager in-person/FAX/email/internal mail, and filing work documentation (e.g., filing cabinet, binder, computer)

Using: computer, company report templates, and general office equipment (e.g., FAX, computer)

Drawing on: knowledge of basic computer applications, knowledge of company specific policies and procedures, and knowledge of Provincial/Federal legislation

Relying on: oral/written communication skills

In order to: prepare and maintain routine administrative records


Access Control

TASK: Provide site access

DETAIL: Verbally greet individual(s) entering premises/site/facility, looking at/examining personal identification (e.g., student, staff member, visitor), checking identification against access list, asking questions (e.g., identity, purpose of visit), informing person of site restrictions (e.g., no phones or cameras)/providing directions/instructions (as necessary), examining/searching individual(s)/property/vehicle (as necessary), writing/logging in person/vehicle in entry/exit log/documentation, writing/typing entry/observation data in notebook/documentation (as necessary), and granting access to facility (e.g., issuing key card/key chain, open gate)

Using: computer, sign-in/out binder, access card/keys, pen, company report templates, and access aids (e.g., card, key, badge)

Drawing on: knowledge of basic computer applications, and knowledge of company specific policies and procedures

Relying on: oral/written communication skills, interpersonal skills, judgment/decision-making, and observation skills/attention to detail

Access Control

TASK: Monitor and control movement within site/premises

DETAIL: Escort visitor(s)/contractors/employees on premises/site/facility, admitting visitors/employees electronically (e.g., computerized access control system) or personally to other areas of the site, observing visitor/employees’ behaviour, looking for irregularities/unexpected events (e.g., unauthorized entry to part of building), and reporting irregularities/unexpected events to management/supervisor/dispatch (as necessary)

Using: computer, camera, access aids (e.g., card, key), computerized access control system

Drawing on: knowledge of company-specific policies and procedures, knowledge of risk assessment techniques, and knowledge of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

Relying on: observation skills/attention to detail, judgment/decision-making skills, assertiveness, and interpersonal skills

Access Control

TASK: Control egress/exit of person(s)

DETAIL: Greet individual(s) leaving site, examining/searching personal property/possessions (as necessary), comparing entry data to egress/exit observations/data, (re)directing individual(s) to permitted area (as necessary), using physical force (as necessary), reporting incidences to others (e.g., dispatch, police) (as necessary), collecting access cards/keys (as necessary), and allowing egress/exit of site (e.g., open/unlock door) (as necessary)

Using: two-way radio, computerized access control system, cameras, alarm systems, computer, pen, company report templates, and access aids (e.g., card, key, and badge)

Drawing on: knowledge of Federal/Provincial legislation, knowledge of basic computer applications, knowledge of SMART service and drinking cut-off procedures, and knowledge of company policies and procedures

Relying on: interpersonal skills, judgment/decision-making skills, observation skills/attention to detail, and oral/written communication skills

In order to: control egress/exit of person(s)


Assistance to general public

TASK: Provide assistance to general public (e.g., directions to motorists, lost child, persons with disabilities)

DETAIL: Talk to/interview person(s) of interest (e.g., parents of lost child), asking follow-up questions (as necessary), directing/providing information to person(s) of interest (e.g., refer to shelter, track/search for lost and found) (as necessary), calling other personnel/support service for assistance (e.g., ambulance, police) (as necessary), and securing site (e.g., lock-down location) (as necessary)

Using: phone, two-way radio and PA system, pager

Drawing on: knowledge of company specific policies and procedures, and knowledge of basic first aid

Relying on: oral/written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and judgment/decision-making skills
