Licensing and Forms

If you are a security guard, private investigator, bodyguard, bouncer or loss prevention personnel, you must hold a valid licence.

Agencies that sell security services must also be licensed.

Duration of licence

Security guards and private investigators:
As of January 30, 2012, new licences expire two birthdays after the date of issue.

If you held a valid blue licence card on January 30, 2012, you should have received a yellow Notice of Extension in the mail extending your licence to your first birthday after the expiry date printed on your blue licence card.

You must carry both your blue licence card and your yellow Notice of Extension at all times when on duty from January 30, 2012 until you receive an orange licence card that states your birthday as the expiry date.

All licences renewed after January 30, 2012 are valid for two years.

Agencies:

As of January 30, 2012, new agency licences expire two years after the date of issue.
Agencies with valid licences on January 30, 2012 must renew by their current expiry date.
Upon renewal, agency licences are valid for two years.

Business Registration

Any business entity that employs its own in-house security personnel, but is not in the business of selling security services, is required to register with the ministry.

This may include, but is not limited to retail stores, hotels and hospitals. Registrations are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Businesses that employ security staff from a licensed security agency do not need to register.

Business registration forms can be sent by fax to 416-212-1603.

The form must be:

• Completed, clear and legible
• Signed and dated

Payment must be made by credit card if sending the form by fax.
