Private Security & Investigative Services
Licensing
On August 23, 2007, the Private Security and Investigative Services Act came into effect. The new law requires security industry workers to be licensed, including some that were not licensed previously.
If you are a security guard, private investigator, bodyguard, bouncer or loss prevention personnel, you must now apply for a licence from this ministry.
Agencies that sell security services still need to be licenced and must renew annually.
Business Registration
Under the act, any business entity that employs its own in-house security personnel, but is not in the business of selling security services, is required to register with the Private Security and Investigative Services Branch.
This may include, but is not limited to retail stores, hotels and hospitals. Registrations are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Businesses that employ security staff from a licensed security agency do not need to register.
To ensure all registrations are issued on time, businesses are requested to apply before August 23, 2008.
Business registration forms and licence replacement forms can be sent by fax to 416-212-1603.
The form must be:
- Completed, clear and legible
- Signed and dated
Payment must be made by credit card if sending the form by fax. Please note that individual licence applications and agency licence applications will not be accepted by fax.
