Home Fire Escape Planning

  1. It’s Fire Prevention Week and the [insert fire department] wants you to be a hero in your home and plan and practice your home fire escape plan.

If a fire broke out tonight while you were sleeping, would you and your loved ones be able to get out safely? Take a few minutes to plan your escape from fire and practice it with everyone in your household. Make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room, if possible. Arrange a meeting place away from the home where everyone can meet and call the fire department from outside the home.

  1. I’m [insert name of fire department spokesperson] from the [insert name of fire department]. Many people who die in home fires are overcome by smoke while trying to escape.  Having a home fire escape plan is one of the best ways to ensure you and your loved ones get out safely.  Everyone in your home should know two ways out of all areas.  Assign an adult to help the very young and older adults.  Choose a safe meeting place outside and call the fire department from the neighbour’s.  A message from the [insert name of fire department].

Smoke Alarms

  1. If a fire occurred in your home, would your smoke alarms work? Don’t wait for a tragedy to find out.  Smoke alarms are designed to give you and your family the precious seconds you need to safely escape.  Test your smoke alarms every month by pressing the test button until the alarm sounds. Change the batteries at least once a year or whenever the low-battery warning chirps. And NEVER remove the batteries for any reason.

Remember: having working smoke alarms is not only a good idea, it’s the law.

  1. I’m [insert name of fire department spokesperson] from the [insert name of fire department].  If a fire starts in your home, early detection is vital to get you and your family out safely.  Install a smoke alarm on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas – it’s the law!   Test your smoke alarms once a month and change the batteries once a year.  Working smoke alarms can give you the precious seconds you need to escape.  A message from the [insert name of fire department].
