Subsection 1.(4) Automatic Aid Agreements

SUBSECTION 1.(4)

"For the purposes of this Act, an automatic aid agreement means any agreement under which,

1. a municipality agrees to ensure the provision of an initial response to fires, rescues and emergencies that may occur in a part of another municipality where a fire department in the municipality is capable of responding more quickly than any fire department situated in the other municipality; or

2. a municipality agrees to ensure the provision of a supplemental response to fires, rescues and emergencies that may occur in a part of another municipality where a fire department situated in the municipality is capable of providing the quickest supplemental response to fires, rescues and emergencies occurring in the part of the other municipality."

INTENT:

The legislation contains a permissive provision for automatic aid. Under an automatic aid agreement, the fire station which can respond the quickest would respond to a call irrespective of municipal boundaries. The Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 supports automatic aid agreements as a public safety measure.

1. by agreement to incorporate the concept into the Mutual Aid plans, and

2. by entering into individual agreements with the surrounding municipalities.
